Abstract:
Purpose: This study examines the effects of social capital (SC) and human capital (HC) on the sustainable development (SD) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Hung Yen province, Vietnam, through the mediating role of innovation capability (IC).
Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative approach was applied, surveying 312 SME managers in Hung Yen province via convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using Cronbach’s alpha, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM), together with bootstrap mediation testing (5,000 resamples). Common method bias was addressed through procedural research design and assessed using Harman’s single-factor test.
Findings: All five hypotheses were supported (p<0,001). SC and HC positively influenced IC (β = 0,412 and 0,476, respectively), and IC substantially enhanced SD (β = 0,538; R² = 0,45). IC mediated the relationships between SC and SD (β = 0,222; 95% CI [0,141, 0,322]) and between HC and SD (β = 0,256; 95% CI [0,176, 0,347]). The findings indicate that SMEs should strengthen SC and HC while treating IC as the mechanism that converts these resources into sustainable development; local authorities, in turn, should prioritize building an innovation ecosystem.
Originality/value: This study provides empirical evidence for an integrated SC-HC-IC-SD model among SMEs in Hung Yen province, grounded in the resource-based view (RBV), dynamic capabilities theory, and the triple bottom line (TBL) framework. It establishes IC as a mediating mechanism and contributes to understanding how emerging-market SMEs translate intangible resources into sustainable development.
